Mr. GMAYANK-1 copyopal Agarwal, a resident of Mathura and the father of the 18 hour baby, Mayank have expressed his gratitude for Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer and his team at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. Fortis Escorts Heart Institute has conducted the emergency open heart surgery on an 18 hour baby who is reported as the youngest case in the country till date.

MAYYANK-3 Mr. Gopal says, “My baby was born in the city of Mathura and within minutes of his birth was declared to have severe difficulty in breathing. After being at two local hospitals in Mathura, the local doctors were still unable to treat my baby and asked us to rush the child to a multi-specialty hospital in Delhi. On refusal of the hospital in Delhi, my child was subsequently referred to Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer at FEHI. A decision was made to perform an open heart surgery that involved cutting the chest open and performing the surgery on the valves, muscles or arteries of the heart. The surgical team of doctors was headed by Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer, Executive Director- Paediatric & Congenital Heart Diseases at FEHI.”

The baby, Mayank Agarwal was born with a heart defect called the Obstructed Critical Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC), a medical condition in which the blood does not take the normal route from lungs to heart and out of the body. Instead the veins from the lungs are attached to the heart in abnormal positions. The abnormal veins are narrow and the oxygenated blood enters or leaks into the wrong chamber. Hence the blood tends to dam up in the lungs. The blood passing through the aorta to the body does not have normal amount of oxygen which causes the child to become breathless and look blue. Hence the only option is an emergency surgery in order to avert the fatal consequences.

Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer1According to Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer, “Rapid advances have taken place over the last few decades in the diagnosis and treatment of the pediatric congenital heart defects. Today there are diagnostic tools available using which more accurate diagnosis can be made even before birth. Using the currently available treatment modalities, over 75% of infants born with critical heart diseases can survive beyond the first year of life. Many of them can lead a near normal life thereafter. The key to all this is early diagnosis and timely intervention. Since Mayank was born with an additional defect of abnormal and narrow veins, it posed as a bigger challenge as the veins had to be treated immediately.”

The congenital heart diseases refer to the structural or the functional heart diseases that are present at birth. In India, the total live births are estimated at about 28 million per year. The reported incidence of the CHD is 8 to 10 per 1000 live births in the world and in India; it is 6 to 8 per 100 live births. In this nearly 33 to 50 percent of the defects are critical with over 180,000 children being born with the heart defects each year in India needing intervention within the first year of life.

In the words of  Mr. Gopal Agarwal, We have experienced the joy of the birth of a baby boy in my family and it was the happiness that we almost lost. Despite the time that we lost in reaching Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer, he immediately started the corrective procedures on my baby. I am so grateful to have come to Dr. Iyer who restored the joy and happiness in my family.  indiacardiacsurgerysite.com/fortis-hospital/
