Hospital is equipped with intensive cardiac care unit that has advanced monitoring equipment. The Heart Team of Nanavati Hospital implants hundreds of implantable devices to help people live a quality of life, devices such as,

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy – CRT

The Heart Team of Nanavati Hospital implanted many CRT devises successfully. CRT is a device designed to help the heart beat with the right rhythm, uses a pacemaker to restore the normal timing pattern of the heartbeat. The device coordinates the timing of the upper heart chambers and the lower heart chambers and also works on the timing between the right and left sides of the heart.

The pacemaker will be placed just below the collarbone by minor surgery. There are three wires from the device which are connected to the ventricles on both side of the heart, which helps in detecting heart rate irregularities and in synchronizing the heart by emitting tiny pulses of electricity to correct them.

The doctors may implant CRT for the following reasons-

  • Heart failure
  • Chambers of the heart are not working together
  • Heart is weak or enlarged
  • Medicines are not working to control the heart failure

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator – ICD

The Heart Team uses ICD devices to treat and prevent various disorders related to abnormal heart beats. ICD is a small device about the size of business card which is placed under the skin that keeps track of the heart rate. It is use to detect an abnormal heart rhythm, if the heart is beating chaotically and too fast then the device will deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

Patients who have ventricular tachycardia, cardiac arrest, coronary heart disease, abnormal heartbeat, brugada syndrome, inherited heart defect and arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia can be benefited with ICD’s.

Before implanting an ICD device, the doctors will perform several tests-

  • ECG – Electrocardiography
  • Echocardiography
  • Holter monitoring
  • EPS – Electrophysiology study
  • Event recorder

Heart Transplantation

The Heart Team of specialists consist of highly renowned advanced heart failure, heart transplant cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeon, cardiovascular imaging specialists and cardiovascular surgeons, providing the most comprehensive care to patients with advanced heart problems including heart failure.

A heart transplant is an operation in which diseased or failing heart is replaced with a healthier donor heart(the one who is declared brain dead by the doctors). A heart transplant is a major operation in which the chances of survival are good with proper follow up care.

Before heart transplant, the doctors will perform several diagnostic tests-

  • Blood test
  • Chest X-ray
  • Coronary Angiogram
  • Echocardiogram
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Metabolic Stress test
  • MRI/ CT Scans
  • Myocardial Biopsy

Heart Pumps (VAD) – Ventricular Assist Device

VAD also known as mechanical circulatory support device is a heart pump that pumps blood from the lower chambers of the heart to the rest of the body. VAD devise is implanted in people who have weakened heart or heart failure. VAD is a mechanical pump that is implanted in the left, right or both ventricles of the heart. Doctor will recommend you VAD implantation as a long term treatment if you are not a good candidate for heart transplant or you have heart failure.

The procedure of VAD implantation requires open heart surgery and it can be lifesaving if patient have serious heart failure. Diagnostic procedure include-

  • 2D Echo
  • Chest X-ray
  • CPET and VO2 max
  • RFT/LFT
  • HbA1C
  • Triple H
  • Thyroid test
