Achievable Paediatric Heart Transplant for Restricted Cardiomyopathy

Achievable Paediatric Heart Transplant for Restricted Cardiomyopathy

Patient From: Gleb

Country: Moscow

Condition Treated: Restricted Cardiomyopathy

Treatment/Procedure: Paediatric Heart Transplant

Doctor/Surgeon: Dr. K. R. Balakrishnan – Director of Cardiac Sciences

Hospital: Fortis Malar Hospital

In a miraculous Heart procedure, Dr. Balakrishnan Top Heart Transplant Surgeon in India and his team performed a Heart Transplant successfully on two-year nine months old Russian child. For Gleb’s mother, it was very difficult to see him suffer from such a difficult Heart condition. With the help of her acquaintances, she managed to come to Germany. There, Gleb underwent a thorough diagnosis and the doctors told her that he would survive another two years. She tried talking to many hospitals and doctors outside her country but ultimately,Fortis Malar came to her rescue.

Gleb was found to be suffering from a condition called Restricted Cardiomyopathy. Dr. Balakrishnan says that in this there are a lot of challenges considering the organ involved. Also, since the pumping action of the Heart is impaired so the pressure on the other organs like the Lungs is very high. Also, his Liver and Kidneys were malfunctioning. His belly, too had a lot of fluid in it. The only option was a transplant but while they waited for a donor, Gleb suffered from a stroke. He wasn’t able to speak and couldn’t use his right leg. Luckily, they got a call from Manipal Hospital Bengaluru that a Heart of two-year-old was available. With the immense support from the doctors there and Green Corridor created by the Bengaluru Police, the Heart was transported to Chennai as early as possible.

Since the Heart was from a kid with normal Lungs pressure, it was challenging for Gleb as the pressure on his Lung was very high. Dr. Balakrishnan waiting in the operating room for almost eight hours till the right ventricle was functioning enough to maintain the systemic Blood Pressure. The transplant was done in an hour and Gleb was shifted to the ICU. He was taken off the ventilator in 10 days.

Dr. Balakrishnan adds that the delicate age of the patient and the other congenital defects are very critical to repair. Many kids are recommended conventional Heart procedures, and they even undergo such surgeries as kids but when they grow up, unfortunately, many have to face Heart Failure. To avoid this, Heart Transplant can be a much better therapeutic choice for long term relief. But there isa very limited number of paediatric donors and another challenge is to match the size and weight of these kids.

Luckily, for Gleb, it was possible to overcome all the hurdles and he had a rapid recovery. He even gained almost 3-kilos of weight after six of surgery. His mother feels that Gleb is born again. She is so grateful to Dr. Balakrishnan for his dedication and care which was overwhelming. All thanks to him that her kid is a happy child today. She says that she would like to visit India every year.

Thank you,
Ms. Gleb, Moscow
