It was in the year 2012 that 28-year old Serugaba Charles Kagigi’s unit as attacked by rebels, near the city of Goma in Congo. Unfortunately, he was badly injured in a bomb explosion. A piece of shrapnel pierced through his neck and was lodged in his Heart. He lost a lot of blood. For three months, he underwent treatment at a hospital in Kinshasa, but it was not a successful. After this, for two months, he also went through treatment at Nairobi but still there was no improvement. Disappointed, he came back to Congo.

He thought of going to India for treatment as he had heard a lot of Indian hospitals, surgeons and their success rates. His case came into the proficient hands of Dr. Sandeep Attawar. One of the most renowned Cardiac surgeons in India, he has cured numerous patients with the most complicated heart conditions.

Dr. Attawar says that there were shrapnel injuries on Charles, but they are treated by the local hospitals. But the most harmful one was the one that was in the Heart. The shrapnel had surpassed many crucial structures like the food pipe, the Aorta, the Lungs, the voice box and placed itself in the Heart. To be more exact, it was in the Right Ventricle from where the impure blood goes to the Lung for purification then comes to the Left Ventricle from where it’s circulated to the body.

According to him, it was a miracle that Charles has survived so many months with the shrapnel in one of the most critical sections of the Heart. A Beating Heart Surgery was performed using a stabilizer and it was placed in such a way that it immobilized the injury site. Then he slit open the artery and with the help of a special set of tweezers, the shrapnel was extracted. The surgery was successful, and he didn’t lose much blood.

A week later Charles had recovered very well and was ready to head back home. This as per Dr. Attawar was a great sign and he says that Charles would be able to lead an absolutely normal life. Charles is very grateful to Dr. Attawar for gifting a fresh lease of life. He looks forward to serving his country again.

Thank you
