One of the topmost healthcare providers in India, FMRI conducted Heart procedures on Tanzanian kids successfully. According to Dr. Ali Amour Ali, a Senior Consultant and Paediatric Cardiologist in Zanzibar, the number of Heart patients in Tanzania is shocking, and this is particularly in children. There are thousands of children there suffering from difficult forms of Cardiological disorders. Unfortunately, Tanzania faces a major lag in its healthcare system and the most modern Heart treatment and surgeries are not available.

According to Dr. Sandeep Attawar, the Director of Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery at FMRI, performing Heart procedures on children is always a big challenge as they are very delicate and highly prone to getting infection. These kids belonged to the age group from seven months to four years and several of them had issues like a hole in their Heart, which was hampering their growth. When Lions International and their sister concern in Tanzania along with Regency Hospital heard about the spectacular level of work that this entity has been doing, they approached to get associated to the ‘Heart Baby Project’. This project has been extremely active for more than a decade has been doing a marvellous amount of work in this field. In fact, till now over 30,000 kids have received treatment successfully.

After this, Lions Club came ahead to help so that these children could come to India to get the much-needed cure because most of these belonged very underprivileged category. Not only this, the iconic club also donated so that these families could afford these expensive treatment and surgeries at one of the finest hospitals of India – the FMRI. Very ably handled by Dr. Attawar and other senior surgeons, these kids underwent a wide range of surgical procedures such as to close the holes in their Hearts, open the blocked arteries as well as non-surgical procedures where devices were used to close the holes and valves were opened with the help of balloons.

Dr. Attawar further adds that just correcting the defect is not enough as the after-cure is equally crucial so that once they go back, they are able to lead a normal and comfortable life. He says that it is a very fulfilling experience to see these families go back home smiling.
