As a retired General from the Bahrain’s Army, it was extremely depressing for 69-year old Mr. Shaikh Mohamad Abdulla Hamad Alkhalifa, when his health condition got so bad that he wasn’t even able to walk comfortably. He would get disappointed to look at himself in the mirror. He was facing health issues like shortness of breath, fatigue, and pain in his joints, which had weakened him physically but surely did not lessen his spirit to get well.

Mr. Shaikh went to many doctors and the conclusion drawn was that he needed a Lung Transplant. He found it difficult to find the right treatment opportunity in Bahrain, so he planned to come to India because he was told that India has every kind of modern cure available easily. On finalizing everything, he came to Gleneagles Global Hospital in Mumbai, where he underwent a detailed check-up under the observation of Dr. Sandeep Attawar. The reports showed that he was suffering from Pulmonary Fibrosis, which had damaged his

Senior Consultants Dr. Balasubramani and Dr. Vijil Rahulan says that when Mr. Shaikh arrived at the hospital, he had an oxygen concentrator with him. Generally, the cut off age for Lung Transplantation is 60 years. However, in this case the patient was not ready to give up and wanted to go through the procedure. He further adds that the disease had affected his left Lung badly, but his right was comparatively better. So, the doctors decided to perform a Single Left Lung Transplant procedure on him.

Thankfully, they received the donor organ on time and the surgery was performed flawlessly by Dr. Attawar and his team of other senior doctors. In this surgery, there was no need to put the patient on the Heart-Lung Machine and the surgery was over in 3-4 hours. The duration of hospital stay was 10-14 days during which the patient recovered very smoothly. For Dr. Attawar, every patient and every surgery are different in its own way and the positive outcome serves as huge encouragement.

Mr. Shaikh says that when he came to know that Dr. Attawar has done more than 10,000 surgeries and has an exceptional track record, he was confident that he was in the perfect hands. He is immensely grateful to Dr. Attawar and other staff members at the Global Hospital.
